89% of the population owns mobile phones
Mr Anusha Pelpita, the Director General of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission says that, 89% of the population of this country are using mobile phones.Up to June 2011,more than 18176000 mobile phone sim cards have  been  registered in this country.
Meanwhile,number of the fixed telephones have reached the 359925 mark. 40% of the fixed telephones have been registered in the Western Province, while the balance amount were spread throughout the country.
Since internet facilities are being provided by 10 internet service suppliers,through the fixed an mobile phones,throughout the country, from 2009 to 2011, the number of the customers who use the Broadband facilities have been increased from 230,000 to more than 520,000, Mr Pelpita says.
