Marks will be given for spoken English in the G.C.E. Ordinary Level.
As only a written test is being held for the English Language at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination at present, it was decided to allocate 10 to 30 marks for the speaking ability, commencing from year 2014.
However, this new system will be initiated by allocating a maximum of 10 marks for the speaking ability.
Dr Sunimal Fernando, the Coordinator to the Presidential Task Force on English says that, this new method was introduced to develop the English Language skills from the school age.
He also says that, to test the English speaking ability, of the G.C.E. Ordinary Level students,throughout the year, a special evaluation system will be prepared, while the necessary facilities will be provided for same.
Since these evaluations will be activated  by the teacher in charge of English Language subject and a teacher from another school, the marks obtained by the students will be added to the marks of English Language subject in the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level)Examination.
