Dr Sumathipala delivers the PGIM Oration 2011

Dr Athula Sumathipala, the Hon Director of the Institute for Research & Development (IRD) in Sri Lanka and also a Senior Lecturer at Kings College London delivered the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine Oration this year. The oration titled “Patients with Medically Unexplained Symptoms; Epidemiology to Treatment Development Research in Sri Lanka – Going from Local to Global level” is based on 20 years of his research in Sri Lanka. It was held on the 9th of December 2011 at the PGIM auditorium. Dr Sumathipala is recognized as one of the world authorities in this field, and this was a major recognition of his pioneering research including the only two treatment trials done in the developing world for medically unexplained symptoms using a psychological intervention.
