Two new varieties of Cinnamon introduced

For the first time in Sri Lanka, two varieties of cinnamon were introduced by the Cinnamon Research Institute at Palolpitiya of Thihariya. These two varieties were named as ‘Gemunu’ and ‘Vijaya’. Since the harvest of the currently cultivated varieties are very low, these new varieties were introduced. Presently, 470 Metric Tonnes of harvest could be obtained from a Hectare and it could be doubled through cultivating of the new varieties.
The specialty of these varieties are the very high percentage of oil included in it’s hull and the leaves.
Earlier, in 1980s Dr Gurusinghe has conducted researches on these varieties and later by Mr W.D.F Gunarathne the Director General of Agriculture.Now these two varieties were introduced by Mr K.P.P Wijesinghe, the Officer In Charge of the Cinnamon Research Institute of Palolpitiya.
