The Chief Justice is a Tamil gentleman. But we never saw any difference. Our issues were always with the Judges who were failed to maintain the independence of the Judiciary. Then again, honestly speaking, we can’t fault them, too. The tragic truth is some of the controversial verdicts were given due to political pressure.

The Supreme Court is so far above the political influence and managed to maintain the independence.

I am failed to understand, why should our Judiciary give into political influence? The Judges are protected by the Constitution. They have the immunity from prosecution for carrying out their duties or any acts within their judicial function. If they are threatened by the government to suppress their promotions in order to influence their rulings, they can always “seek justice”.

An independent Judiciary is one of the cornerstones of the democracy.

The citizens of this country should have the confidence that the Judge dealing with their case is not influenced by the government politicians, not unduly lenient to the government or any outside party or most importantly by the Judge’s own personal interests, such as a fear of being suppressed for promotion, transfer or any other legitimate rights they enjoy.

The only basis of the rulings and the decisions of the Judges should be the facts of the case, judicial discretion and the law.
