I agree. He is a hero but tried the dirty trade of politics and became very unpopular. However, we should not insult him. If he wasn’t there, the war would have been still on. Ask any Army officer who was actively involved in the war. They may not like him because he was tough but they will agree that he commanded troops and made winning strategies.
When the East was liberated, SF was in hospital bed injured by the suicide bomb attack inside the military HQ. So, the credit for that should mainly go to Major General Parakrama Pannipitiya and then Brigadier Chargi Gallage.
In the final phase of war, SF was in Beijing, China negotiating an arms deal. The credit for the final battle should mainly go to Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, then brigadiers Shavendra De Silva, Prasanna De Silva and Kamal Gunaratne.
